Ajnas — the building blocks

Each maqam is built from two overlapping tetrachords (ajnas). The lower jins defines the maqam's character; the upper jins provides resolution. Understanding ajnas reveals how maqams relate and modulate between each other.

Lower tetrachordLower Bayati
D — E♭½ — F — G

The heart of the maqam. The quarter-flat second (Sikah) is what gives Bayati its instantly recognisable soulful, pleading quality.

Upper tetrachordUpper Nahawand
G — A — B♭ — C

Provides resolution and balance, grounding the maqam after the tension of the lower Bayati genus.

Emotional character & uses

Bayati is the maqam of longing and deep emotion. Its quarter-flat second creates an immediate pull toward nostalgia and vulnerability that listeners recognise instinctively — even without knowing a single word of music theory. It is the most frequently heard maqam in everyday Arabic music.

  • Romantic and love songs (tarab)
  • Muwashshah and adwar
  • Islamic call to prayer (adhan)
  • Vocal improvisation (mawwal, taqsim)
