Ajnas — the building blocks

Each maqam is built from two overlapping tetrachords (ajnas). The lower jins defines the maqam's character; the upper jins provides resolution. Understanding ajnas reveals how maqams relate and modulate between each other.

Lower tetrachordLower Saba
D — E♭½ — F — G♭

The most distinctive tetrachord in Arabic music. The lowered fourth (G♭) is unique to Saba and is responsible for its deep, sorrowful colour.

Upper tetrachordUpper Ajam
G — A — B♭ — C

A major-type upper tetrachord that creates a poignant emotional contrast with the sorrowful lower genus.

Emotional character & uses

Saba is the maqam of grief. Its uniquely lowered fourth degree creates a tension no other maqam achieves, making it the primary choice for laments, elegies and deeply sorrowful improvisations. Even listeners with no knowledge of maqam theory feel its weight immediately upon hearing it.

  • Emotional vocal improvisations (mawwal)
  • Elegies and laments
  • Sufi devotional pieces
  • Dramatic theatrical and cinematic scenes
